Wait, did the Doctor want to feel guilty? I thought he wanted to see someone that he liked and was annoyed that the TARDIS kept showing him people he felt guilty about.
I can understand why people are unhappy about the exclusion of the old companions - I feel the same way to some extent. I would have loved to see certain companions there. But looking at this from a Doylist point of view, it makes much more sense to have a select group of people that a) everyone in the audience will recognize and b) where there’s a good cut-off point, rather than randomly selecting a few from the old series along with the new.
And let’s face it - if everyone the Doctor feels guilty about had made an appearance, he would have been dead before the first half had finished showing up. Oh, Doctor.
(Maybe they could have flipped through them all really quickly, like in that Meanwhile in the TARDIS scene? IDK.)
